Everything about arranging a private move. From packing to moving, find the right moving company for your home move.
A private move is a private move where you as an individual or family move from one home to another. Most removals in the Netherlands fall into this category.
With a private move, you have the choice of organizing everything yourself, outsourcing part of it, or leaving it entirely in the hands of a professional moving company. Which choice suits you best depends on your budget, the size of the move, your physical capabilities and the time available.
Moving companies usually offer three packages for private removals: a basic package where you pack yourself and the moving company only loads, transports and unloads; an extensive package where the company also packs and unpacks; and an all-in package that covers everything including dismantling and assembling furniture. Prices vary from 400 euros for a small basic move to 3,500 euros or more for a large all-in package.
Arrange a private move (per move)
A successful move starts well in advance. If you start too late, you will encounter fully booked moving companies and unnecessary stress.
Eight weeks before the move is a good time to start. Request quotes, compare moving companies and book your preference. During high season (May to September), popular establishments can fill up months in advance.
You start packing five weeks before the move. Start with the rooms or items you use the least. Clearly label each box with its contents and destination room at the new address.
A week before the move, you pack your daily belongings, arrange address changes and ensure that the mover knows the exact location and accessibility of both addresses. Keep an emergency kit set aside with essentials for the first night.
Moving yourself is the cheapest option on paper, but the actual costs are often higher than expected. Renting a van costs 60 to 150 euros per day. Crates and boxes, foil and tape, and possibly compensation for friends also count. And then there are the risks: injuries from heavy lifting and damage to furniture or the home.
A professional moving company is more expensive, but faster, safer and less stressful. Two trained movers can do in four hours what takes you and two friends a full day. They have the right equipment and are insured against damage.
The choice depends on your situation. For a studio or small home with little furniture, moving yourself with the help of friends is easy. For a larger house, heavy furniture or high floors without an elevator, a professional moving company is a smart investment.
Damage during a move does happen. A damaged cupboard, a cracked mirror or a dent in the wall are annoying but can be reimbursed with the right insurance.
Moving companies are legally required to have liability insurance. This covers damage to your belongings caused by the mover. However, the coverage is not unlimited. Check the maximum reimbursement in the quotation.
In many cases, your own home contents insurance also provides coverage during a move. Check your policy for the exact conditions.
Additional insurance is recommended for valuable or vulnerable items such as art, antiques or musical instruments. Always check the condition of your belongings before and after the move with photos.
