These weeks are for everything you cannot change later. Book a moving company six to eight weeks ahead, because in summer and at the end of the month the good ones fill up first.

Arrange a new school or childcare
Popular schools and childcare centres work with waiting lists that can run for months.
Too late: Leaving it late means a place further away for a while, or a period to bridge.

Give notice on your rental
The notice period is usually one month, but check your tenancy agreement. Some landlords ask for longer.

Plan the handover of your old home
Line up the transfer date of your old home with your moving date, so you do not have to move twice.
Too late: If the dates are far apart, you need temporary storage or you carry double housing costs.

Arrange a furniture lift if you live high up
With a narrow staircase or a home on an upper floor, a lift is faster and safer than carrying. Using the public road sometimes needs a permit from the municipality.

Arrange storage if your homes do not line up
If your old and new home do not follow on from each other, you need somewhere to keep your belongings.

Book a packing service or order boxes
Packing yourself takes more time than most people expect. Start with what you rarely use.
3 weeks before
Order internet for your new address
Delivery often takes two to four weeks, and sometimes an engineer has to come out.
Too late: Ordering too late means spending your first weeks in the new home without internet.
3 weeks before
Arrange a skip or bulky waste collection
At most municipalities an appointment for bulky waste takes one to three weeks.
Too late: Without an appointment you are stuck with things that cannot come along.
2 weeks before
Move your energy contract or switch supplier
Switching or transferring your contract takes a few working days. A move is the natural moment to compare.

Update your insurers and subscriptions
Contents and liability insurance are tied to your address. Your health insurer, bank and employer want your new address too.
Too late: An address you did not pass on can mean damage in your new home is not covered.

Set up mail forwarding
With the PostNL forwarding service, mail still going to your old address reaches you anyway.

the week before and after handover

The busiest week. You hand over the old home and take on the new one. Arrange these things in advance, because on the day itself there is no time left.

Arrange a clearance if the home must be emptied
If a home has to be handed over completely empty and clean, that is more work than an ordinary move.
3 days before
Clean the old home for handover
The old home usually has to be handed over clean and empty. Plan this once your things are out but the keys are not yet returned.

Record the meter readings of both homes
Photograph the gas, water and electricity readings in both homes on the day itself.
Too late: Without a photo you have little to stand on in a dispute over the final bill.

Final inspection with your landlord
Walk through the home together and have the condition recorded. Take your own photos as well.
Too late: Without a report, repair costs can still end up with you later.
1 day after
Replace the locks of your new home
You never know who still has a key to your new home. Replacing the cylinders is one morning of work.
5 days after
Register your new address with the municipality
You can report your move from four weeks before until five days after the moving date at the latest. The municipality passes your new address on to the tax office and your health insurer, among others.
Too late: Reporting it later can mean a fine, and post that keeps going to the wrong address.

Work is easiest while the house is still empty. Painting and flooring cost less time and money before your furniture arrives.

Have walls and ceilings repaired
Have plastering done before anything is painted. In an empty home a plasterer works faster and nothing has to be covered up.

Have the painting done
Painting an empty home is faster and cheaper than working around your furniture.

Have the flooring laid
Lay a floor before the cupboards go in. Wooden floors often have to acclimatise in the home for a few days first.
2 weeks after
Have window coverings made
Made to measure curtains and blinds often have a lead time of three to six weeks.
Too late: Until they arrive you are without blackout or privacy.
3 weeks after
Finish the odd jobs and assembly
Hanging lights, assembling cupboards, finishing skirting boards. Bundle it into one job, which is usually cheaper than separate visits.
4 weeks after
Tackle the kitchen or bathroom
This is least disruptive before you really live there. Count on one to three weeks in which that room cannot be used.

3 to 12 months after the move

After one winter you know where it draughts and what the energy bill does. That is the right moment to make the house more efficient.

Have the heating checked or replaced
Replace a boiler older than fifteen years before winter, not during it. In the heating season installers have their longest waiting times.
4 months after
Have your insulation assessed
Floor, cavity wall and roof insulation usually pay for themselves the fastest. Check first whether national or municipal subsidy applies.
5 months after
Consider solar panels
Have the condition and load capacity of your roof assessed first.
Too late: Panels on a roof that needs replacing within five years means paying for the installation twice.
5 months after
Have a charging point installed
Check first whether your fuse box can handle it. A light connection has to be upgraded, and there is a waiting time for that.
