Request and compare moving quotes

A reliable quotation is transparent, specified and confirmed in writing. Making verbal agreements and later having to discuss what was or was not included is a situation you want to avoid.

A good quote contains at least: the names and addresses of both locations, the moving date and time of start, the number of movers and the type of vehicle, a description of the goods to be moved, a specification of all costs including VAT, and the payment terms.

In addition, the quotation must state which liability insurance the company uses and what the maximum reimbursement is per item. If you have valuables, ask about additional insurance.

A quotation without VAT amount, without the name of the moving company or without a description of services is incomplete. Never sign a quote that you do not fully understand.

Comparing three quotes side by side is good, but you must compare them on the same basis. The lowest price is not automatically the best choice.

First check whether all quotes include the same service package. Quote A may include packing and set-up, while quote B may only include loading and unloading. In that case, quote B is cheaper on paper, but the total costs may be comparable for the same service.

Look at the experiences of other customers. Reviews on Google, Trustpilot or recognized industry sites provide an idea of ​​the company's reliability.

Also check whether the company is affiliated with a trade association. Members are bound to a quality standard and a complaints procedure.

Also include communication in your assessment. A company that responds slowly to questions or gives unclear answers does not behave differently after the booking.

Unfortunately, the moving market also has companies that do not deliver what they promise. A few signals you should be alert to.

An extremely low price, significantly below the market average, is a warning sign. Sometimes prices are kept low and then additional costs are charged for parking, overtime or special goods.

Companies that refuse to put a quote on paper are unreliable. A serious company always confirms agreements in writing.

A high down payment, more than 50 percent of the total amount, is also a risk. There have been cases of companies taking the deposit and then not showing up.

Always check whether the company has a Chamber of Commerce registration and a valid address.

Moving quotes, contrary to what many people think, are often negotiable. There is room to negotiate a better price, especially outside the high season and for larger moves.

The most effective approach is to be honest about the competitive quotes you have received. Tell a company you have a comparable quote for a lower price and ask if they can match it.

You can also add value to the deal yourself. If you indicate that you are willing to move on a flexible date, it gives the company more planning freedom, which they can reward with a lower price.

Also ask about any discounts. Some companies offer discounts for cash payments, for moves to a specific region, or if you also need storage.
