Renting storage space is useful when moving, renovating or if you simply run out of space. The monthly costs vary from 30 euros for a small box to more than 400 euros for a large container. Discover the current prices and what you should pay attention to here.
Average cost for a storage facility (per month)
Storage space, also called self-storage, is a lockable space that you rent per month to store your things. This can vary from a small storage box of 1 cubic meter to a full container of 20 feet. The areas are generally clean, dry and secured with cameras and an access control system.
Storage space is often used when moving, renovating, bridging a period between two homes, or simply to create extra space. Entrepreneurs also use storage space for stock, archives or seasonal materials.
The price of storage space mainly depends on the size and location. In the Randstad, rates are on average 20 to 40 percent higher than elsewhere. A small storage box of 1 cubic meter costs an average of 30 to 50 euros per month. For 3 cubic meters you pay 50 to 90 euros, and for 5 cubic meters 75 to 140 euros per month.
For a larger size such as 10 cubic meters, the costs are between 120 and 250 euros per month. A complete 20-foot container, suitable for the contents of a single-family home, costs 200 to 400 euros per month. Please note: some providers charge additional costs for insurance, a padlock or a deposit.
As a rule of thumb, you need 3 to 5 cubic meters for a student room or studio. For a two-room house, 5 to 8 cubic meters is sufficient, and for a single-family home you should count on 10 to 20 cubic meters. Many storage companies offer a free measuring service to determine the correct size.
Tip: stack boxes and furniture smartly to make maximum use of space. Use shelves and place heavy items on the bottom. This way you need fewer cubic meters and save on monthly rent.
The most common types are storage boxes (individual units in a large building), garage boxes (separate units with a roller shutter) and containers (movable sea containers). Storage boxes are the most popular for private individuals because of their flexible sizes and good security. Containers are cheaper per cubic meter but less flexible.
Check security: cameras, access control and possibly an alarm system. Ask about the cancellation conditions, because some providers have a notice period of one month. Check whether the room is climate-controlled if you store sensitive items such as furniture, electronics or clothing. Always compare multiple providers, because the price differences can be significant.

The larger the space, the higher the monthly rent. The price per cubic meter decreases as you rent more space.
In the Randstad and large cities, rates are 20 to 40 percent higher than in rural areas. Consider a location just outside of town for a better price.
Many providers offer discounts for longer rental periods. Some offer a 10 to 20 percent discount for a contract of six months or longer.
Climate regulation, 24-hour access and extra insurance increase monthly costs. Decide in advance which facilities you really need.
The minimum rental period with most providers is one month. You can rent the storage space for as long as you need, from a few weeks to several years. Most contracts can be canceled monthly with a notice period of one month.
Most storage companies offer optional contents insurance for 10 to 30 euros per month. Also check whether your own home contents insurance covers items in external storage, as this is not always the case.
Most storage locations offer access during business hours. 24-hour access is often available at an additional cost. Check the opening hours before concluding a contract.
For the complete contents of a single-family home, you need an average of 15 to 20 cubic meters. If you are only storing some of your belongings, 5 to 10 cubic meters is often sufficient.
