How much does a charging station at home cost?

A charging station for home will cost an average of 900 to 2,500 euros in 2026, including installation. The price depends on the brand, the functionality (basic or smart) and the complexity of the installation. A basic charging station without smart functions costs 500 to 900 euros for the device, plus 400 to 800 euros for installation.

A smart charging station with app control, charging card support and dynamic charging costs 800 to 1,500 euros for the device. The installation costs are comparable. If your distribution box needs to be expanded or a long cable duct is required, the total costs can amount to 3,500 euros.

Types of charging stations

There are two main categories: charging stations and wall boxes. A wallbox is a compact charger that is mounted on the wall, ideal for a garage or carport. A charging station is a free-standing post for the driveway. They are the same in terms of technology. Most home chargers charge with 11 kW (3-phase), which fully charges your car in 4 to 8 hours.

Smart charging stations offer additional functions such as solar charging, dynamic load limitation (so that your main fuse is not overloaded), multiple charging cards for business use and integration with energy management systems. These functions are especially interesting if you have solar panels or drive for business.

Installation costs and what's involved

The installation includes installing the charging station, running a cable from the distribution box and installing a separate group with an earth leakage circuit breaker. With a standard installation (less than 10 meters of cable) this takes 2 to 4 hours. If the distribution box is full or the cable has to go through the crawl space or garden, the costs increase.

Some grid operators require a heavier connection if you want a 3-phase charging station. The costs for strengthening your connection are 200 to 500 euros. Check in advance with your network operator whether your current connection is sufficient.

Smart charging and saving

With a smart charging station you can charge when the electricity is cheapest, for example at night with a dynamic energy contract. You can also charge on your own solar power, which means you save a lot per kWh. Dynamic load limitation prevents your main fuse from tripping if you load the oven, dryer and car at the same time.

The costs per kilometer of driving on electricity are between 3 and 6 cents, compared to 10 to 15 cents for petrol. On an annual basis, an electric car saves you 500 to 1,500 euros in fuel costs. With your own solar power, charging costs are virtually zero.

What determines the price?

Type of charging station

A basic charging station is cheaper but lacks smart functions such as solar charging and dynamic load limitation.

Distance to distribution box

The further the charging station is from the distribution box, the more cable and digging is required, which increases costs.

Distribution box capacity

If your distribution box is full, an additional group must be placed. This costs 150 to 400 euros.

Connection capacity

For 3-phase charging you need a 3-phase connection. Reinforcing your connection costs 200 to 500 euros.

Saving tips

  • Choose a charging station with dynamic load limitation to prevent overloading your connection.
  • Combine a smart charging station with solar panels to charge for free using your own electricity.
  • Compare at least three quotes including installation costs and cable work.
  • Choose a charging station that is suitable for charging with 11 kW (3-phase) for the fastest home charging time.
  • Do you drive for business? Choose a charging station with a charging card function for easy declaration.

Frequently asked questions

What does a charging station cost including installation?

A charging station including installation will cost an average of 900 to 2,500 euros in 2026. A basic model with standard installation is at the bottom, a smart charging station with a longer cable route is at the top.

Do I need a 3-phase connection?

A 3-phase connection is recommended for the fastest charging at home (11 kW). With 1-phase you can charge with a maximum of 3.7 kW, which takes 10 to 14 hours for a full battery. Upgrading to 3-phase costs 200 to 500 euros from your grid operator.

Can I get a subsidy for a charging station?

There will be no national subsidies for private charging stations in 2026. Some municipalities and employers do offer a contribution. Check your municipality's subsidy guide for current regulations.

How much does it cost to charge my car at home?

At an average electricity rate of 0.25 euros per kWh, fully charging a car with a 60 kWh battery costs approximately 15 euros. This is enough for 300 to 400 km of driving range. With your own solar power, the costs are virtually zero.
