Average cost for a boiler installer (average)
An HR boiler (High Efficiency boiler) is the standard heating boiler in Dutch homes. The device heats your house and provides you with hot water with an efficiency of 95 to 107%. The boiler achieves this high efficiency by recovering heat from the flue gases. Almost all new boilers installed today are HR107 boilers, the most economical category.
There are three types of HR boilers: the combination boiler (heating and hot water in one device), the solo boiler (heating only, combined with a separate hot water boiler) and the system boiler (heating with a built-in or external boiler tank for more hot water comfort). The combination boiler is by far the most popular in Dutch households.
An HR combi boiler including installation will cost an average of 1,800 to 2,800 euros in 2026. The boiler itself costs 800 to 1,600 euros, the installation 600 to 1,200 euros. More expensive models offer additional features such as higher capacity, a larger modulation range or a built-in OpenTherm control.
A solo boiler costs slightly less (1,500 to 2,200 euros in total) because the device is simpler. A system boiler with a boiler tank is the most expensive (2,500 to 4,000 euros) but provides more hot water comfort when using multiple taps simultaneously. The costs for disposing of your old boiler are 50 to 150 euros.
An HR boiler lasts an average of 15 to 20 years. Signs that replacement is necessary: the boiler is older than 15 years, its efficiency decreases (higher gas bill), you have several breakdowns per year, parts are no longer available, or the boiler makes unusual noises. A new HR boiler quickly saves 10 to 20% on your gas bill compared to a 15-year-old one.
Don't wait until your boiler breaks down completely, because then you will be without heating and hot water and you will be forced to choose quickly. It is best to plan the replacement in the spring or summer, when technicians are more available and sometimes offer discounts.
The most popular HR boiler brands in the Netherlands are Remeha, Nefit (Bosch), Intergas, Vaillant and AWB. All brands supply reliable boilers, but there are differences in warranty, service and price. Remeha and Nefit have the largest service network. Intergas distinguishes itself with a simple design with fewer moving parts.
When choosing, pay attention to the energy label (A or better), the warranty period (standard 2 years, often extendable to 5 or 10 years with a maintenance contract), the modulation range (the wider, the more economical) and whether the boiler is OpenTherm compatible for connection with a smart thermostat.
With the energy transition, the question is whether an HR boiler is still the right choice. If your house is well insulated and you have underfloor heating, a (hybrid) heat pump may be more economical in the long term. For homes with energy label D or lower, a HR boiler is still the most practical and affordable solution, especially if you do not want to immediately invest in insulation.
| Service | From | To | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| HR combi boiler (incl. installation) | €1800 | €2800 | total |
| HR solo boiler (incl. installation) | €1500 | €2200 | total |
| HR system boiler with boiler tank | €2500 | €4000 | total |
| Installation costs | €600 | €1200 | per installation |
| Dispose of old boiler | €50 | €150 | per boiler |
| Renew flue gas discharge | €200 | €500 | per piece |
| Replace thermostat | €80 | €250 | per piece |
A combination boiler is the cheapest. A system boiler with a boiler costs more but offers better hot water comfort at multiple tap points.
Premium brands and boilers with higher power (for larger homes) are more expensive to purchase.
If the flue gas discharge, pipes or radiators also need to be replaced, the costs increase considerably.
A boiler in a difficult to reach place (attic, crawl space) costs more to replace due to the extra labor time.
An HR combi boiler including installation will cost an average of 1,800 to 2,800 euros in 2026. The price depends on the brand, power and any adjustments to the flue gas discharge or pipes.
Remeha, Nefit (Bosch), Intergas and Vaillant are all reliable brands. Remeha and Nefit have the largest service network. Intergas distinguishes itself with a simple design. The best choice depends on your budget and wishes.
A well-maintained HR boiler lasts 15 to 20 years. Annual maintenance maintains efficiency and prevents malfunctions. After 15 years, the risk of malfunctions increases and it is wise to plan replacement.
Yes, a HR boiler is still the most practical choice for most homes, especially if your house is not optimally insulated. Alternatively, you can consider a hybrid heat pump that works together with a small HR boiler.
